TIPS ON HOW TO HAVE A GREAT SHAVE AT HOME – Barber Quality Shave At Home (5-Minute Guide)
How to Shave – How to Perform a Barber Quality Shave At Home
Step 1: Preparation
Make sure you are well prepared to begin the shave by having everything you need.
Step 2: Consultation
Ask your client if they have any issues when shaving themselves i.e. any sensitive areas, do they suffer from ingrowing hairs, razor burns, or shaving rashes.
Step 3: Pre-Shave
Apply Pall Mall Barbers Pre-Shave Scrub to the shaving area and massage it thoroughly into the chin and upper lip and then into the cheeks and throat, all the while feeling for any moles, spots, dry or rough patches. Remove any excess product with a damp towel.
Step 4: Hot Towel
There are a number of ways to heat your towels i.e., towel steamers, in a microwave, or with a kettle. Fold the towel in half and wet thoroughly in very hot water then wring out any excess water. Check the temperature of the towel on your wrist. Place the towel over the chin and mouth then bring the ends of the towel up over the eyes leaving a gap for the nose. Make sure the towel is removed before it cools.
Step 5: Applying Pall Mall Shaving Oil/Pall Mall Barbers Shave Cream
Make sure your cut-throat razor has a fresh blade then wet your Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Brush in warm water. Put a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Cream in a bowl and lather till you get a smooth consistency. Once you have removed the towel apply a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Oil as this will help the blade glide smoothly over the skin and lock in moisture. Apply Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Cream using the Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Brush over the area you want to shave.
Step 6: Initial Shave
Starting on the right-hand side of the face, with your thumb raise the skin to get the maximum amount of tension in the skin, and with your blade flat against the skin begin by making a stroke of approximately 1 inch. Move your thumb down to keep the tension in the skin continuing to the jawline. Repeat along the cheeks working towards the mouth (always shave with the grain of the hair for the first shave). Then move on to the throat area. Take tension at the jawline and shave down till you reach the bottom of the neck keeping an even amount of tension as you go. Moving on to the chin place your index and middle fingers just above the jawline gently stretch the skin back towards the ear and shave to the center of the chin. Move your tension up and shave from the corner of the mouth to the center of the chin. Moving on to the top lip take your tension above the lip to the side of the nose and shave down to the corner of the mouth. Gently lift the nose to clean any hair away. Repeat the process on the other side of the face.
Step 7: Secondary Shave
As done in the Initial Shave, place your hand just below the area you are going to shave and gently stretch the skin downwards and shave up again moving your tension as you go shaving up to the jaw line. Follow the same procedure as the Initial Shave, but make sure you go against the grain on the Secondary Shave. Finally, when you have removed Pall Mall Barbers Shave Cream, apply a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Shaving Oil and feel for any rough patches on the skin. Remove any remaining hair.Step 8: Cold Towel and Pall Mall Barbers Cooling Gel
Cold towels should always be stored in a refrigerator. Apply a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Cooling Gel to the freshly shaved face then place the cold towel over the chin and mouth. This will sooth the skin while closing the pours. The cold towel should remain on for approximately 30 seconds. Using the cold towel remove any excess product.
Step 9: Post Shave
Lastly, apply a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Post Shave Balm to the fresh face and massage gently until its absorbed into the skin. Apply a small amount of Pall Mall Barbers Cologne just to the neck and you have got the perfect shave.
COMMON SHAVING PROBLEMS AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM
For some men shaving can be easy or for some it can be painful and torturous experience. All men at some point in their lives have either had shaving rashes or cuts. Here are some common shaving issues that can occur and solutions to help avoid them.
Shaving Rash
Shaving rash is a type of skin irritation that occurs on the skin after shaving. It usually appears a few minutes after shaving but can also develop later in the day if you are wearing a tight collar top. Shaving rashes are not the same as razor bumps which are caused by a lot of little in-grown hairs.
Causes: Poor preparation, blunt blade and going over the same area repeatedly.
Solution: Like any rash the first thing you should do when you get a shaving rash is to cool the area down. You can apply a cold damp towel to the area or whole face and then you can use Pall Mall Barber’s Cooling Gel which has witch-hazel ingredients to calm the skin down.
Razor Burn
Razor burn is a skin irritation that can be caused by dry shaving; shaving too aggressively; or shaving with blunt blades. Typically, it starts to appear a few minutes after shaving, and often takes the form of a rash. Razor burns and shaving rashes are not the same as razor bumps, a condition caused by in-grown hairs.
Causes: Blunt razor, applying too much pressure when shaving and skin reacting to a certain product.
Solution: Like a shaving rash, there is a burning sensation which needs to be cooled down. As mentioned, in the Shaving Rash Solutions section you can apply a cold damp towel to the area or your whole face and then apply some Pall Mall Barber’s Cooling Gel to help the skin cool down completely.
Nicks and Cuts
Shaving in a hurry or using a rough blade is the most common cause of nicks. Every man cuts themselves while shaving and ask why.
Causes: Poor preparation, applying too much pressure with the razor, not stretching the skin enough and using the wrong razor.
Solution: Nicks and cuts are the most common shaving issues that men experience. It is painful and at the same time irritable to the skin. Pall Mall Barber’s offers Styptic Matches which can be used to stop the bleeding. All you have to do is tear one match and wet the tip of it and apply it to the area that has been cut and leave it there for one minute. The bleeding should stop instantly.
